Computer Network

Computer Network is basically two or more computers connected together for sharing resources.

Types of Computer Network

A computer network is classified into how much area is covered by them.

Types of computer network

LAN : Local Area Network

A Local Area Network is a Computer Network that allows Computers to interconnect within a limited area. A LAN can be a single building, any Office, Home, or any Company.

A LAN can be as simple as only two PCs or it can connect all departments of any company with their peripherals. The most advantage of LAN is resource sharing, Resource means Hardware, Software, and Data. LAN has a limited geographical area restricted to a few KMs. LAN is wholly owned by a particular Organization.

LAN is the digital communication system that interconnects computers and shared resources. Computers connected to LAN communicate throw a common communication medium.

MAN : Metropolitan Area Network

The extended version of LAN is called Metropolitan Area Network. The area covered by MAN is about 10 to 50 miles. This is bigger than LAN but smaller than WAN. For example, any company using MAN by connecting all offices/branches spread over the city.

WAN : Wide Area Network

A Wide Area Network is a telecommunication network that connects computers across large distances and crosses the boundaries of cities and states.

In other words WAN is a collection of Local Area Networks (LANs) That communicate with each other. or we can say WAN is a Network of Networks.

By using a WAN Computer user in one location can communicate with the user in another location. There is no limit on WAN area. It is a worldwide network, some examples of WAN are Internet and SBINET.

VPN : Virtual Private Network

Virtual Private Network enables the user to use their private network resources from a remote location. It creates a secure connection over the Internet. Many companies and organizations use VPNs to enable its employee to securely use company resources from a remote location.
