What is Network Protocol

A Network protocol is a set of rules that govern data communication over the network. Without a protocol, two devices may be connected but not communicating, just as a person speaking French can not understand by a person who speaks only Spanish.

Protocols are needed to communicate but also how devices identify one another on a network, how data is transmitted, and how this data is processed once it reached its destination.  

 

 

Any task we perform on network protocol is needed such as transferring data, sending Emails, video calls, accessing any website, even taking a printout.

List of 7 Types of Network Protocol

1. TCP

    The Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) is one of the main protocols of the Internet Protocol Suite.

TCP is a connection-oriented protocol hence it established a virtual path between client and server. Connection-oriented provides reliable data communication. In which every time a data segment reached the server it acknowledges to sender. 

2. IP

    Internet Protocol (IP) is addressing protocol that identifies devices over the Internet. It works with TCP hence called TCP/IP. A data packet containing an IP address transfers through different nodes and networks until it reached its final destination.  

There are two types of IP address 

i) IPv4 :- Internet Protocol version 4 is a 32bit addressing protocol used to identify devices over the internet.

ii) IPv6 :- Internet Protocol version 6 is the latest version of the IP address. It uses 128 bits to represent the address of any device over the internet.  

3. FTP

    File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is used to transfer files from one host to another over the Internet. FTP provides downloading and uploading files from a remote location. FTP enables the user to view the content of the file, rename, edit, delete a file on a file server. FTP uses two separate mechanisms for control and data communication. Authentication is essential to use an FTP server.   

4. POP

    Post Office Protocol (POP) is an application layer protocol used by an Email client to retrieve emails from a mail server. POP uses TCP/IP protocol suite. POP support downloading of emails to client from mail server.

5. SMTP 

    Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) is used to send Emails. SMTP uses TCP connections to guarantee error-free delivery of emails. SMTP can be used to both send and receive Emails.

 

6. HTTP

    HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP) is the foundation of data communication for the world wide web (Internet). Data may be plain Text, Hypertext, audio, video. HTTP is based on the Client-Server model. for example a web browser may be a client and a computer hosting website may be a server.

HTTP is an application layer protocol. HTTP is based on TCP/IP but it is a connectionless protocol. The client initiates a request and the client waits for the response, the server process the request and sends a response back to the client after that client disconnects the connection. So client and server know each other during current request and response only.

7. VOIP

    Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) is used to transfer voice over the internet using packet switching. By using VOIP, phone calls can be done via the internet instead of public switching telephone line. This type of phone call is cheaper than a telephone line.
