Transmission Media

Transmission Media is a pathway that carries the information from the sender to the receiver.

 Types of transmission media.

There are two types of transmission media

1. Wired / Guided Media

2. Wireless / Unguided Media

In this post, we will understand Wired Media.

Types of Media

Wired media means where data transmission takes place with the help of a wire. The wire is a physical medium by which data travels from source to destination.

Wired Media has three types

a. Twisted Pair Cable

b. Coaxial Cable

c. Optical Fiber Cable

a. Twisted Pair Cable

In Twisted Pair cable wires are twisted to each other

Again Twisted Pair cable have two types

1. Unshielded Twisted Pair Cable (UTP)

In Unshielded Twisted Pair Cable does not have any shield on wires you can see in the below diagram it is a 4 pair UTP cable and all are covers with PVC plastic jackets but the wire has no shields.

2. Shielded Twisted Pair Cable (UTP)

In Shielded Twisted Pair Cable wire have a metallic shield (aluminum foil ) this is called a shield. You can see in the following fig.

b. Coaxial Cable

In Coaxial Cable copper wire is present in middle, this copper wire is covered with an insulator a fiber material. The insulator is covered with other conductor mesh. So this cable has two conductors first is copper wire second is mesh. Now data travels from copper wire, and power supplies from the mesh. Most outer jacket is a PVC jacket to protect Mesh. It is used in cable TV.

Below fig. will explain to you

c. Fiber Optic Cable

In the Fiber Optic Cable center is glass core by this light propagates and with light data travels. A cladding is wrapped around the glass core a special type of chemical because when light propagates from the glass core it does not go outside from the glass. So we apply cladding. After cladding, an outside jacket is fabricated to protect Glass Core. Fiber Optic Cable has two types

> Single-Mode Fiber Optic Cable
> Multi-Mode Fiber Optic Cable
